Boxing Day 2007

Festive Family Football Fever
There were a number of new pairs of football boots making their debut at the annual Bourn Sports Club family football match on Boxing Day at the recreation ground. Despite suffering square eyes from too much TV, swelly bellies from too much Christmas pud, twitching thumbs from new electronic games and mobile phones (and some of the dads were also complaining of fuzzy heads?), enough people turned out on Tuesday for a full 11-a-side match. After shaking out the cabin fever with a warm up and a running race (won by the youngest player on the field Harry Fordham), just like the premier league, teams were selected on height order and those who had received red Manchester United strips from Santa.
The rules were simple; the parents couldn't score and were limited to 3 touches, although to be honest 10 minutes into the game it's all they were capable of with the kids running rings round 'em. The all-stars went into an early lead with a great goal by Joey Whitmore. The red bibs fought back and Dan O'Brien evened the score before half time putting a lovely shot past static keeper Simon Elbourn. The second half was just as exciting as the first, with some great football exhibited by both teams. The game was decided in the final minutes by a frantic goal mouth scramble in which Tom Blair found the back of the net for a 2:1 win for the red-bibs. Thanks to all the spectators and to Liz Elbourn and Eddie Blair for supplying the post match mince pies and Sherry (hic).
Best wishes to all for the New Year
